How to reconcile Stripe payouts with a bank statement
A payout is the net amount Stripe sends to your bank. It is not the same thing as the day’s sales. This guide shows how to compare the payout-level amount and date with the bank deposit, explain ordinary differences, and keep uncertain rows visible for review.
What you are matching
Stripe payout
A payout represents funds transferred from Stripe to a bank account. Its net amount can reflect fees, refunds, disputes, adjustments, reserves, and the settlement schedule.
Bank deposit
The bank statement records when the deposit posts to the account. Posting or arrival can occur on a different date from the payout’s creation or availability date.
Stripe’s own reporting documentation distinguishes payout reports from other balance and transaction reports. Start with a payout-level report when the question is whether money reached the bank, then use itemized detail when you need to explain the payout’s components. See Stripe’s payout reporting documentation.
A practical reconciliation workflow
- Export the relevant Stripe payout report and a bank statement covering the likely posting window.
- Identify the payout ID, currency, net amount, and payout/availability date where those fields exist.
- Find the incoming bank line. Compare amount and currency first, then compare dates using a documented tolerance for settlement or posting delay.
- Review the reason for any difference: fee or refund inside the payout, date shift, currency mismatch, missing counterpart, or an ambiguous candidate.
- Keep unresolved items visible. Do not force a match just because two amounts look similar.
- Continue the accounting treatment in your normal bookkeeping workflow after the evidence is reviewed.
Common reasons the dates or amounts differ
Timing
Weekend, holiday, and payout-schedule effects can move the bank posting date. A date shift is not proof that the money is wrong.
Net settlement
Fees, refunds, disputes, and adjustments can make the payout smaller than gross sales. The bank deposit should be compared with the payout’s net amount.
Currency
Different currencies are not interchangeable. A same-number amount in another currency must remain a currency mismatch until reviewed.
Missing or ambiguous rows
A payout without a plausible deposit, or two deposits with the same amount, needs review rather than an automatic guess.
